Building Affiliate Passive Income around Indian eCommerce Sites

Building affiliate passive income is not everyone’s cup of tea, especially in India because we do not possess the right mind set! Harsh, but true!

Nonetheless, if you are a blogger, you must have heard about affiliate marketing. Earning an affiliate passive income via your blog/s or niche sites is not an easy job. You need to refer visitors to eCommerce websites and when they make a purchase via your link, you get commissions.

Easier said than done!

If you think deeply, you will realize that there are two kind of affiliate marketers. The first one are those high on the radar drawing a six figure income per month. The second category is of those who are struggling to earn even $1 per month. Most of the affiliate passive income seekers fall into the second category! Harsh, but true!

Before I more on to share some Indian eCommerce sites offering affiliate passive income, take a look at this infographic. It deals with the Indian online shopping trend, highlights the often bought products and the general structure of online shopping in India. If nothing else, check out the products and optimize them to build your affiliate passive income.

Are these Worth it?

I know you are thinking whether its possible to earn anything from them or not. The answer will depend completely on your niche, resourcefulness and expertise. You cannot expect to earn from day 1 with these networks.

Moreover, a major drawback of Indian affiliate passive income sites are its payouts. If you have already worked with non-Indian affiliate products, USD is the primary commission mode. In other words, if you earn $1, its 50 INR for us. Right?

Now, if you venture into the Indian affiliate industry with this mindset, you will be hugely disappointed with your earnings. The payouts of the Indian eCommerce affiliate networks are very less, comparatively.

For instance, 10% is the highest commission rate in Flipkart and that too for their “Digital” product category. Let’s assume that you have sold a laptop worth 30,000 INR, your earning will be 3000 INR. This might seem a good amount to you but note that it is a highly competitive niche. Every other Indian affiliate marketer will go for the same niche because of the payout percentage. In that case, how are you going to earn? Their other segments like healthcare and TV have a 1% and 0.5% commission rate. Are they worth your time? You need to decide.

3 Tips for Affiliate Passive Income

Selling to an Indian and non-Indian audience base calls for different strategies and plans. Here are some important tips:

  • You are going to have a very difficult time trying to convince an Indian buyer to buy from your blog/s when they can directly go to a eCommerce website and purchase. Therefore, have patience.
  • Building a blog and adding affiliate products on it will not be enough, ever. You need to brainstorm and come up with an unique idea. A lot of Indian bloggers are earning affiliate passive income via coupon websites. You can try this out but again, there will be a lot of competition and less leverage potential.
  • Do not promote a product blindly. Use it and then promote. It will be great to write a review around it and promote it heavily.

Takeaway

It takes more than a cool website to earn money online, especially in the affiliate marketing field. If you want to storm into the affiliate marketing niche in India, you need solid uniqueness, knowledge of the Indian market and select a niche that converts or has the potential to convert swiftly.

I would like to know more from Indian affiliate passive income creators. Anyone willing to share?

  1. Hi Chitra,

As you know I live in the U.S. I know India will be a huge market for eCommerce, in the future, if not now. Tell me do you think it would be feasible for me to put up a website to sell products to people in India? I’d definitely need someone there to run it and pick out the products or niches that would be worthwhile.

Of course it would be a lot of work and it would probably be best to have an Indian partner to do most of it productwise, but I could do probably everything else. I would also probably need to foot the entire cost, assuming it was reasonable (in American dollars).

I know eCommerce sites here in the USA can potentially make a LOT of money, but it takes a lot of work and effort (lots of promotion to get huge traffic going to the site). I don’t know if lots of work and traffic would mean big money in the Indian market for an eCommerce site. Maybe for a high traffic blog, yes, but not too sure about eCommerce.

Give me your informed opinion about this.

    Thanks,

    Charles
