5 Steps to the Perfect Domain Name

Choosing a domain for your own personal projects or business will require a lot of effort and thought. Since this is going to be your identity on the web, it’s so important that you make a choice that you can be happy with for years to come.

To help you choose the best domain name, here’s how you can find the perfect domain name:

Easy to Type

A good domain name should be short and easy to type out. For example, you’re going to want to avoid slang, hyphens and numbers because this will only confuse someone when you tell them what your domain is. For example, Food2Go.com may confuse some because they would substitute the number two with the word “to.” NetworkSolutions.com recommends that you that you stick with two to three short words when registering a domain.

Don’t Forget the Keywords

If you’re going to be serious about marketing your website on the Internet, then picking out the right keywords is a must. Try your best to include your primary keywords in your domain name to help boost your website when a search is performed. For instance, if your business revolved around dog grooming, then you would probably want to include the word “dog grooming” within the domain.

Research

Before you register a domain, make sure that the word isn’t trademarked or copyrighted. The last thing that you want to do is register it and find out down the road that the company is sending its lawyers after you.

Find the Appropriate Extension

When most people think about a website, they often think of the .com extension; however, as most of us know, there are other extensions that you can choose from. While the .com extension is the most popular, there are others that are often used, including: .co, .info, .net, .org, .biz and .me. Be sure to research each extension to see if it can benefit your website.

Memorable

Remember that word-of-mouth advertising is always going to be your best advertising method. If someone landed on your website and liked it, then there’s a good chance that they may run out and tell their friends. However, if they forget your domain because it was too long or complex, then you could have missed out on some potential new customers.

Since domain names sell quickly, you don’t want to wait if you found a name that is available. Choosing a good domain name is a creative process that can take some time. By using the tips mentioned above, you should be able to find a name that is memorable, brandable and successful for years to come.

    Hi Chitraparna,

After the Google EMD update, they say keyword in a domain has lost its importance but I think still its got some relevance. It might not be exact match but having one keyword in the domain is beneficial for SEO purposes.
