The Best Movies for a Weekend at Home

Written by Staff

Watching a movie at home is one of the little ways people can indulge themselves. You can watch a classic foreign film and imported delicacies with your significant other, eat pizza in a blanket fort and binge on Disney films with your children, or grab some ice cream and your favourite romantic comedy on nights when being with other people is just too much.

There are an endless number of ways that people have found to enjoy and watch their favourite movies at home. DIRECTTV packages have made the entire process faster and more convenient by eliminating the need to trek to the movie rental place and then worry about a return trip to avoid late fees.

20th Century Classics

Most people don’t realise that movies first began in the 19th century. It wasn’t until 1927 that the first movie with sound was released, and from there the movie industry grew exponentially.

There have been movies that have defined entire generations, and it’s almost necessary to break down the bests by decade.

The 1930s was considered the golden age in Hollywood for a good reason. During this time span, the most popular movies included some of the most iconic of any decade.

  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  • Stagecoach
  • King Kong
  • The Wizard of Oz
  • Gone with the Wind

The 1940s was filled with war stories, intrigue, music and romance. Some of the best movies to snuggle up with from this decade include the following.

  • Casablanca
  • Citizen Cane
  • The Maltese Falcon
  • It’s a Wonderful Life
  • Meet Me in St. Louis
  • Pinocchio
  • Miracle on 34th Street

The 1950s saw an even stronger interest in musicals, and Hollywood made a concentrated effort to get people into the theatres and away from their television sets. Fortunately for those of us today, home theatres are equipped to bring out the best of these movies.

  • Singin’ in the Rain
  • Some Like It Hot
  • Rebel Without a Cause
  • Ben-Hur
  • A Streetcar Named Desire
  • High Noon
  • The Ten Commandments
  • Guys and Dolls
  • Cinderella

Films began to evolve more in the 1960s. Historical dramas, spy mania, psychological thrillers, and science fiction began making headway, but romance and musicals were still wildly popular. No matter what genre you like, there is probably something from this decade to dive into.

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Psycho
  • The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
  • Lawrence of Arabia
  • The Sound of Music
  • Mary Poppins
  • West Side Story
  • Goldfinger
  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Breakfast at Tiffany’s
  • My Fair Lady
  • Dr. No
  • The Jungle Book

The 1970s saw a depressed Hollywood that was seeking innovation on a budget. It was a fantastic decade for studios thinking outside the box and taking big risks and resulted in some of the most successful and critically acclaimed films from the Golden Age.

  • Jaws
  • The Godfather
  • The Exorcist
  • Alien
  • Star Wars
  • Rocky
  • Superman
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show
  • Carrie
  • Dirty Harry

The innovations of the 1970s paved the way for science fiction, action, and horror to take the lead in the 1980s.

  • Back to the Future
  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
  • Ghost Busters
  • Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • Die Hard
  • Gremlins
  • The Princess Bride
  • The Terminator
  • Top Gun
  • Beetlejuice
  • Dirty Dancing

Movies were officially becoming part of home entertainment, and many of the thousands of films produced in the 1990s were filmed and edited with this in mind.

  • Pulp Fiction
  • Jurassic Park
  • The Matrix
  • The Lion King
  • Forest Gump
  • Schindler’s List
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Titanic
  • Independence Day
  • Braveheart
  • The Fifth Element
  • Men in Black

Great Expectations

The movie industry has a lot to live up to in the 21st century, and there have been many good movies made in the past two decades.

There are some truly spectacular movies that filled the 2017 lineup. Many people don’t want to deal with the hassle of going to a theatre anymore, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t paying attention to what is hitting the box office. This is a great way to start planning future weekends, and 2017 gave movie aficionados a lot to look forward to.

Almost all of the highly anticipated movies in 2017 feature superheroes, which may feel familiar to those who were keeping track of the new releases in 2016.

  • Wonder Woman
  • Justice League
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  • Logan
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming

But there are some other gems that have people waiting on the edge of their living room seating for a small screen release date.

  • Transformers: The Last Knight
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
  • War for the Planet of the Apes
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi
