Death Penalty to five for train attacks

The special MCOCA court on Wednesday awarded Death Penalty to five for 7/11 Train Attacks, who planted bombs in Mumbai locals. The announcement came in nine years after the series of the bomb blast that ripped through the local trains in Mumbai.

The serial bomb blasts in the local trains of Mumbai killed 189 people and more than 800 were injured.

The Convicts- Kamal Ansari, Faisal Shaikh, Ehtesham Siddiqui, Naveed Khan and Asif Bashir Khan-were awarded death sentence for plotting a criminal conspiracy under section 302 of IPC(Murder). Together they have to pay a total fine of 70 lakhs for all the offenses.

“They shall be hanged by the neck till they are dead,” special judge Y.D Shinde said. He further added that “the death sentence shall be subjected to confirmation by the high court and shall not be executed until it is confirmed “

Also, all the 12 convicts were awarded  life imprisonment under section 20 of UAPA(Punishment for being a member of a terrorist gang).

The convicts maintained that they are innocent and alleged that they are made scapegoat to save ATS (Anti-Terrorism squad) from  embarrassment. They said that they have faith in the higher judiciary and hoping for the acquittal.

Meanwhile, public prosecutor hails this judgment by the court. He said that he had sought the death penalty for eight convicts, but the court has sentenced it only to five.

On July 11th 2006, RDX bombs detonated the first class coaches of seven Mumbai local train during evening peak hours. Within minutes, death and demolition could be witnessed across town from Khar Road- Santa Cruz, Bandra-Khar Road and Jogeshwari-Mahim Junction to Mira Road – Bhayander, Matunga-Mahim Junction and Borivali.

The loss to families and the Mumbai ecosystem was a big one and the decision by the court this Wednesday came as a call for justice for those aggrieved by the terrible terrorist event.
